AI EXPLOSION — Identity Theft Via Artificial Intelligence

Identity theft is no longer just about lost wallets or stolen mail. In 2024, it’s increasingly driven by artificial intelligence. Scammers can now use AI tools to generate hyper-realistic fake IDs, and the numbers are alarming.

California ranks number 7 in the national fraud report.

According to the FTC report:

Over 34,000 Americans have already reported identity theft cases involving AI-generated documents this year (June 2025), with total reported losses exceeding $125 million.

Over 60% of identity theft cases now involve AI.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) confirms the growing scale of the threat:

  • In 2023 alone, over 9 million complaints were submitted to the Consumer Sentinel Network (CSN), a tool used by 3,000+ U.S. law enforcement agencies.

  • Identity theft remains one of the top reported categories.

These aren’t just statistics — they reflect a dangerous shift in how personal data is stolen and abused.

How Are AI Fake IDs Made?

Scammers are using advanced AI tools to generate:

  • Driver’s licenses

  • State-issued ID cards

  • Social Security cards

With just your name, photo, and basic info, they can create realistic fake documents. These fakes are used to:

  • Open financial accounts

  • Apply for loans and benefits

  • Rent apartments or lease vehicles

Most systems fail to detect them — because they look real.

What Happens If You’re a Victim?

You may face:

  • Sudden drops in your credit score

  • Debt collectors contacting you for unfamiliar accounts

  • Denials for loans or housing

  • Legal trouble for things you didn’t do

Many people don’t realize their identity has been stolen until months or years later — after the damage is done.

How to Protect Yourself

Here’s what R23 Law’s consumer protection attorneys recommend:

  1. Check your credit report weekly
Free through AnnualCreditReport.com until the end of 2026.

  2. Place a credit freeze
Stops scammers from opening new accounts in your name.

  3. Set up transaction alerts
Get real-time notifications from your bank or credit card provider.

  4. Don’t share ID photos online
Even one shared image can be used to generate a fake.

  5. Watch for early warning signs
Like a loan or apartment application denial you can’t explain.
